because you are communicating to someone you cannot see, you need to have visual communication with something, which some people overcome by making images, or some other 'nervous' activity. communicating to something you cannot look at is unnatural for human beings, that's why.

The person on the the phone I'm talking to sometime is talking about nothing but them self or they are talking about the same thing they talk to me about yesterday. That why I doodle on the phone.

My hands get bored when I'm talking on the phone. The conversation doesn't take all of your attention so doodling fills up the rest.

People probably doodle on the phone because they're bored or nervous. I like to keep my hands busy, too -- but usually I'm sewing something.

lol I never thought of that until you mentioned it but now that I think of it I almost always doodle when Im on the phone sometimes on papers that Im not supposed to and dont realize until after I hang up lol

I try not to doodle it distracts me from what I am talking about.

visual brain needs something to do in visual learning people or muscles need something to do in people who learn by moving.
plus, not all folks doodle while on the phone

I believe it has to do with being nervous. Some people hate to talk on the phone, so it occupies them while talking. Kind of like when people touch there face when in public and talknig.
