If you read the message popping up from your Norton, it is most like that your Virus Definition is out of date or that your Subscription has expired. In this case you may have to update your virus definition and your subscription.

On the otherhand, if you have done these two things, and the pop still keeps coming, there may be a worm (or some viruses) on your computer that Norton is not able to remove because your definition is not up to date. Also, some of the files of your Norton Antivirus might have become corrupted. In this case, the final solution is to reinstall your Norton Antivirus and update your virus definitions.

Finally, if all the above are in good shape, you may have to check the configuration of your Norton Antivirus, it might have been set to scan HTTP traffic and other protocls , which in this case makes your internet slow and all that.

Norton's problem is that he sleeps a lot. He doesn't kick out a virus until I do a computer scan. Then he tells me how many viruses he detected and how many of them he removed.

He very seldom pops up in the lower right-hand corner of my screen and tells me that I'm protected against a harmful virus. I'm beginning to think that's just an advertisement.

It depends what the message was that you got. Did it tell you definitions were out of date, or that there was a detected threat?

One thing you can try is to uninstall and reinstall the norton antivirus program. Sometimes the registry entries get fouled up and the processes interfere with actual websurfing.

Norton is evil. It does things like this to control you. And make you buy more Norton software licensing.

Just uninstall Norton.
Go to http://www.grisoft.com
Download the home version of AVG Free.
Enjoy.
