1. Evaluate your worth. Make a list of your accomplishments, skills and contributions.

2. Arm yourself with information. Know what a normal raise is for someone of your experience and occupation.

3. Assess your supervisor's mood and outlook. Is he or she ready to consider your request?

4. Choose an appropriate time of day. Make an appointment or ask if there are a few minutes to spare. Plan for an end-of-business-day meeting.

5. Consider asking for a specific amount that's a little higher than what you want. Say 8 percent when you would be happy with 6 percent.

6. Be realistic. If your company is going through tough times but you still feel deserving, decide how you'll respond if a lower amount is offered.

7. Be flexible. Would you consider a supplement in perks, time off, flextime or vacation time in lieu of a raise? Negotiate.

8. If your supervisor turns you down, have a plan ready and regroup.

You need to provide reasons for getting a raise. Did you do a particular job especially well? Are you going above and beyond what is expected of you?

Be very polite. Most people wait until they have been on the job for a year before asking.

Yes, after 6+ months it's alright to ask for a raise. Point out how well you've been doing and compare that to the average performance of your peers. Show them that you are an asset to the company and you do your best. And no, they can't fire you.

I have been on my job for 15 months and still have not got a raise. I went straight to the owner of the company and asked him. I did state things like i have never been late, and i have never missed on day since i have started, i always come in when i am asked to do so. Tell them some of your good points and things you have done and just ask! It is very hard but it never hurts to ask!!!!!

The trick is to speak with the person who can decide to say yes to such a request - this may not be your direct manager. You need to support your request with evidence that you are worth more than you are being paid.

You won't get fired, and if you don't ask, you won't get. It is cheaper to keep you happy than have to replace you.

The best time to discuss pay is during your performance evaluation. You probably have one at the one year mark. I would wait until then.
