Best way is to cut down PC use (or other repetetive uses with the hand). Generally, i try to use the keyboard for things others would take a mouse for. I think that helps. Also have many (micro)breaks. Under no circumstances you should continue using a mouse when having pains in the hand. It can become chronic!
Using a trackball indeed might help. Also check if the desk on which the mouse rests, is not too high! Many desks are too high. If so, take a saw or use a footstand to raise your feet.
Also, better use a desktop then a laptop. Laptops are way less ergonomic.
Also, i use a very old keyboard. It's like 15 years old or so. It doesn't have a Windows key, but i don't need that. The advantage of this keyboard is that it clicks, instead creating dampened thumps like on maybe 99,999% of all modern keyboards.
If using a normal mouse, go for a laser mouse.

Try a "trackball". It is like an upside down mouse, where you rotate a golf ball size ball in one spot rather than moving the mouse. They are in the same price range as a good mouse. My wife uses one because of carpal tunnel.
I also install a lot of ergonomic keyboards ar work (I am a computer support tech) that have like roll bars at the bottom that you turn with you thumb. Everyone who has used one says they work well, but I have never been able to get the hung of using one. They are expensive.
My personal favorite is a keyboard with a touchpad build into the bottom, like what you see on laptops. You use your thumb or one finger to control the pad rather than moving the mouse. I don't have carpal tunnel, but I still use the touchpad. I like it over a mouse. (OK, I'm weird that way!!)

You should take a look around Best Buy and CompUSA for a joystick style mouse - they can be held like a joystick in your lap - no wrist stress.
