The time will come, though probably not in your lifetime, when we may run out of oil, at least naturally occurring oil in the ground, although we are far from tapping or even identifying all of the reserves that may be out there. However, there are all sorts of alternatives, not the least of which is coal gasification, which could tap the 500 year supply in the United States alone. Then too it is possible to turn water into hydrogen and oxygen and burn both. Nuclear power offers signficant alternatives as well. You may expect energy costs to rise somewhat during the transition to another fuel source, or combination of energy sources, but the end of the oil supply is hardly a disaster in the making.

Instead, what it is is a transition. Just as oil use was very low in the 19th century when first wood and then coal was the predominant energy source. Times change. Needs change. And we will change to adapt. As oil prices rise with the dwindling supply other energy sources will become more and more economically viable.

There is so much technology out there. Hydrogen, electric, hybrids, CNG. There are so many different forms of alternative fuels. There is actually production of an engine that runs on water and as you see now with the ethanol (E85 or E86, can't remember the number), they are using corn as a fuel. I would not worry about it too much, because if we do run out of oil, we will have many other alternatives to change over to.
