In Georgia we call them turkey buzzards or turkey vultures. They are nasty and scary and have really big droppings when they poop. I wouldn't reccomend them as a pet.

If they are all black and about 19" beak to tail they are crows. If smaller they could be ravens.
Crows make good pets as long as you go out and find fresh roadkill for their meals three times a day. They can also cry out very loud so you need to be concerned about neighbors getting annoyed.
To get one for a pet, there is the problem of how you are going to get your hands on a very big bird that has claws and a bill strong enough to rip flesh for its meal and that has hundreds of similarly equipped friends in its flock hanging around near it. I don't think it will be as easy as picking up a turtle that is walking down the road. It will be more like a scene from Alfred Hitchcock's BIRDS movie. Crows also happen to be a federally-protected bird that are illegal to catch so there's another worry for you.

They are either crows or vultures. Either way, no they don't make nice pets. Approach one and you will get your eyes gouched out. Sorry, if you want to get a bird, I would start with a parakeet.

I've seen vultures in West Texas cleaning up the highway...scary looking and they are huge.
