How can they be sure, they have had generations born there before them, you had your parents to tell you exactly where you were from. Remember when they were brought over as slaves, they probably didn't speak English, things were so different then.

The term African American was given to Black people to help them identify with their roots as well as sound more politically correct, and that's about it.
Unless you have taken the time to trace your roots back to Africa, there is really no way of knowing where you come from.
I'm a Black American and I don't know either. But that doesn't mean I am ashamed of Africa. I have no ties to that country. Once Africans were brought over to America, ties were broken and families were separated. Slaves were property not people and belonged to their owners. So the person they were in Africa no longer existed and they became whomever their master said they would be. As generations continued this information was never passed on so it was lost.
So yes we have black skin but that's where the connection ends.

They said they're American. Born in America=American They will always be Americans but they ancestors may be something different. Just because you may be black does not mean you are from Africa. They are black skinned people in the Caribbean as well.
If you were born & raised in Germany how can you be a Turk. Are you just saying that because both parents are or what.

Because most blacks where stolen from their homes in African and put on a slave ship to the USA. Africans were not permitted to speak in their native tongues nor talk about their home places and I assume over those 400 years of slavery they eventually forgot what part of African they came from. Subsequent generations were born in the USA and we are now and will forever be just Americans. We were not born in Africa and we do not know which part our ancestors came from, but we know where our parents and our grandparents came from, which is AMERICA, we are Americans. Jesus read some black history ....

Most black people don't know what country in africa they're from. It has nothing to do with shame. The only thing I know about my black ancestors is my great grandfather was kidnapped from africa and forced to be a slave. He was the last generation of the slaves, because my grandfather was born after slavery was done, but he lived throught the worst time for black people. My great grand mother was half indian and half irish. I know a little about my background, but I would love to know where in africa my ancestors came from.

Well, Africans were brought to America forcibly, and for generations they were stripped of all knowledge of their history. In many cases, slaves from the same region were split up and placed with slaves from other regions who spoke other languages so as to prevent rebellions. With all the forced separation of peoples, it is no wonder many African Americans don't know where their ancestors are really from. Thus they simply claim to be American, because that's all they know about their family history.

Read your history. Africans were brought here as slaves, as repulsive as that sounds. I seriously doubt that geneological records were considered a priority considering the conditions, but I could be wrong. But overall, people were brought here and enslaved against their will, so it would have been difficult to maintain records detailing family history and origins. I don't think people are "ashamed" of where they came from, but they may not truly know. I'd like to find out more about that. A truly dark and embarrassing time in our history.

Well, I'm not black, I'm Mexican and third generation American, so it's pretty much the same situation. In some cases, maybe their family has been here for so long that any traditions that would come from their homeland have been completely lost through the years, language along with all cultural customs. So if you have no way of identifying with where you are from, what is the point of saying you are from there?
Also, just because someones skin is black, does not meen that they are african. They could be several other nationalities.

One of the first mottos of the US,
"E Pluribus Unum" - from many, one
You made generalizations about a race because you asked two people and they did not know their origins other then to say they were born and raised in the US....
My people made the assumption, because our family came from Montreal, Quebec that we were French. Years later, I found out that is not true, my people were English in Lacolle, Montreal, Quebec.
I am proud that I can call myself an American, as much blood, sweat and tears have been shed for that right. Men and women of all colors have fought and died side by side for American soil...
America will become a much greater place to live when all of its "citizens" are color blind.
I am white and I have 6 beautiful grandchildren whose heritage includes not only a bunch a crazy Canadians but of an African tribe of unknown origins as well.
How do people know which country or tribe they originated from if there is no DOCUMENTATION
You say you love your country, what country is that exactly?

Um, the countries in Africa you refer to didn't exist when most African-Americans' anscestors were stolen from there. Not until Europe decided to colonize the hell out of the continent.
