It is difficult to see the kidney with a laparoscopy from the front of the abdomen.
Usually to see the kidney doctors will use a number of techniques:
Ultrasound - using very high frequency sound waves - bouncing them off the internal organs (like the kidney) and building up a picture, you can see what shape and size they are, and see the cysts quite well.
CT scan - using X-rays in a special spiral pattern (going through the abdomen in this case) and getting a computer to put it all together, you can also see size and shape and the cysts.
There are other imaging techniques but not likely to be used for cysts.
Ureteroscopy - placing a telescope - a bit like the laparoscope - in through the urethra and up into the bladder and then up the ureter - very long telescope - you can get up into where the kidney is and look in that way. This is often used to get out kidney stones or put a stent in (a tube to let urine pass through where there is a blockage otherwise)
Percutaneous Nephrostomy - putting a hole in the skin and putting a tube in through the skin in the side of the tummy, and into the kidney - you can inject dye and take an X-ray - you can put a ureteroscope telescope in and look about if need be.
I have never heard of a laparoscopy to look at the kidneys but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen.
You can do the laparoscopy the normal way - telescope in the front of the belly and go down behind the bowel stuff and look at the kidneys - lumpy things covered by the back wall of the abdominal peritoneum. Not much of a view, but one way to look.
You could even do the laparoscopy sort of how they would do the nephrostomy but instead of going into the kidney you just look about there. It's rather cramped and I don't imagine anyone would get a good look, but it is possible I guess.
Wow - Leah's got it spot on - have a look at the site she posted - it tells you quite a lot!

Laparoscopy is usually done under general anaesthesia. Generally, a small incision is made near the belly button and the abdomen is filled with CO2 gas. This lifts the abdomen away from the internal organs, giving the surgeon a better view. The lighted laparoscope is then inserted into the abdomen. Two other small incisions may be made in the abdomen so additional surgical instruments, such as a probe to move organs, can be used during the surgery. Many surgeons also attach a video camera to the laparoscope to enlarge the view, allowing the entire surgical team to see the procedure. World Laparoscopy Hospital is major pole of laparoscopic and robotic surgery training. It's been 14 years since it is considered internationally as Centre of Excellence for Laparoscopic Training.

Laparoscopic surgery is now used for many conditions that surgery would resolve. Usually it only requires 2 or 3 smalls incisions about a half inch long. These can generally be closed with one stitch and covered with the same kind of bandage you'd use if you cut your finger. Carbon dioxide gas is introduced into the space to help keep the skin from laying on the area the surgeon is trying to see. A camera and small tools are inserted into the incisions so the surgeon can see and do everything he needs to without opening the person up. Laparoscopic surgery greatly reduces the risk to infection and promotes fast healing. It is much less risky than having the older type of surgery with a large incision.

It could be done by laporoscopy and if it is, the incision sites will be small. That would be a much easier surgery than one in which she had big incisions.
The depth of the hole will just be the distance to the kidney which might be about 4" if your mom isn't very overweight.Any surgery is risky, but surgeons do not like to operate with low odds. I'm sure your mom will be fine. They will remove the cysts and she will be much more comfortable.
Don't worry please. Just tell her you know she will be ok and you will be waiting when she comes out.

I'm not sure about the Kidney , but I had my Gallbladder taken out that way .. and it went very well .. recovery time is very short. Ask the surgeon if they are using it on the kidneys yet .. if they are, then you are in luck ! Good Luck and take care ! :)
