Not to sound crazy But we are in no real danger of running out of base product(oil). What were are in danger of is global Warming. This country United States Has oil refineries that have not been in use for 50 years, We started using other countries as a means of increasing Global markets, and the trend has continued because opening new or refurbishing our Oil refineries will cost too much in the short run. Many companies do not want to fork over the upfront costs. There are Millions of capped Oil well here in our own country, yet they say there is an oil shortage, Not true do not believe everything you here on CNN. My uncles and Grandfather worked for a Oil capper Back in the 40's they would go and cap hundreds of thousands of oil wells each year, they have never been used. Also there is ample supplies of oil in Alaska, Where the Sacred Carabou are, If worse came to worst, we could also drill that but trust me on this there is no oil shortage here just untapped resources. If someone were to open a huge oli refinery and offer to buy oil from Citizens here in the United States, their would be another Oil boom. We could live off our own oil supplies for a very very long time!

I think many many industries will falter. Our economy as we know it will be reshaped. Many people will become unemployed or reemployed in new industries that will concentrate on finding alternative ways to accomplish the goals set forth.

We have to keep in mind all the ways that we are dependent upon petroleum products in our everyday lives. Most people when they try to comprehend this only scratch the surface. They don't even realize that the price of an item is dependent upon supply and demand as well as the cost to transport that item. In addition some items which are made of plastics are made from petroleum. Just think of all the things in our lives that are plastic.

I think the ramifications of this question would require a book to explain.

who will run out of oil first?
The price will go up beyond the reach of poor countries, these are the ones who can't afford hybrid vehicles anyway. Solar power and batteries are also too expensive.
What will be their response when we push the price up further? Even more people will try to emigrate to the USA, different countries may attack the west. Folk will starve as before but this time through lack of oil not food.

Sooner than we would like to think unless people become more educated about where our crude oil comes from, and how much of it is produced on a daily basis vs. how much we actually use.
We need to become more responsible as individuals in regard to our consumption and stop expecting the government to bail us out of this problem.
Everyone does not need to drive an SUV all the time.

Never will we run out of oil because the biggest oil reserves are in America and our technology resources are very vast to include other sources of energy like solar and electricity.
