YOU SHOULD ALWAYS HAVE ALL OF THE OPENINGS GOING INTO YOUR ATTIC COVERED WITH A SCREEN MESH,(JUST LIKE WHATS OVER YOUR WINDOWS)I'LL BET YOU SQUIRRELS ARE NOT THE ONLY " CRITTERS" GETTING INTO YOUR ATTIC. BIRDS ARE PROBABLY NESTING UP THERE ALSO.yOU NEED TO FIX AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.WINTER IS AROUND THE CORNER. ALL YOU NEED IS A STAPLER AND SOME SCREEN, IT'S THAT EASY!WHEN IN THE ATTIC, LOOK OVER YOUR INSULATION.YOU MAY NEED TO ADD SOME .THOSE SQUIRRELS, BIRDS, ETC.MAY HAVE CARRIED A LOT OF IT OFF. GOOD LUCK !

I imagine all the houses in your area have squirrels if there are openings between the roof and soffit. Close the opening with screen or a mesh that is made, just for this purpose. You can get it at Home Depot, or equivalent store in your area.

My great grandmother always said moth balls all along the edges of the attic would keep all types of creatures out of the attic. Also I have heard from my friends that cedar blocks work real well too!!!!! Hope I have been of some help.

Cover the soffit with aluminum screen or another type made of metal...the little guys hate chewing on metal and usually will leave it alone. Just to be safe though, you can also tack on a strip of small chicken wire just to give a good backup.

Put up a heavy guage screening. If the holes are small then put steel wool into the opening as well as screening. They won't chew through the steel wool.

Besides putting screening up, which I agree with, try putting up a plastic owl on your roof. You can get them at any garden center. We had a problem with chipmunks, and since putting a owl near our cottage, no more critters!
