There are innumerable things that could be going wrong. Do you have wireless? Do you have a router? Who is your ISP?
The best thing to do is to call the ISP's tech support line and ask them for assistence. It could be something on your end, or it could be something on their end. There's no way to tell from the description you gave. My suggestion would be to find out how to and then reboot your modem (and router, if you have one), then reboot your computer. Make sure all the connections are secure.

Probably a problem with the phone line/system. I had the same constant problem with DSL and the phone company was unable to correct it, so I switched to cable. DSL is notoriously unreliable for a lot of people. I know this answer doesn't help a lot, but it's the unfortunate reality.

try using a different phone cable up to the modem use different network cables between modem and system or modem to router then to system, reload network card drivers, and unplug modem for a minute to reset it and router if you have one. also if you do have a router you may want to connect straight from modem to pc for a day to make sure it isn't the router. If it keeps happening then call and yell at them, and then they will probably blame it on your equipment but if you do all these things that should cover your end

It may be your provider. If everything is hooked up right it should be fine. Call your local provider. It could be something on their end.
