I throw them away. If, it a good skin that not damaged, I think some people collect them. I not know a lot about snakes. But, they shed their skin regularly I assume as they grow. It may be living in the shed or comes there looking for mice. Most snakes are harmless and nothing to worry about. Most people never educate themselves about snakes and thus have a fear of the unknown. I read an article years ago on what people should do if they are bitten by a poisonous snake. Very interesting. They said; remain calm and just go to the Hospital and they give you a shot. They went on to say that; 80% of the people who die from a snake bite do not die from the venom, they die from the Shock, because they freak out. The link below will tell you about the poisonous snakes common to your area.

Out of 37 snakes species in North Carolina, there are only 6 that are venomous. You said the shed skin was"huge", so that eliminates the Pigmy Rattlesnake and the Coral Snake, both of which do not generally get larger than around 12". The others include the Eastern Diamondback and Timber Rattlesnakes, the Copperhead and the Cottonmouth.
Statistically, the chances are, this was not a venomous snake. If the snake is not venomous, then I'd leave things be. It will get rid of vermin that would destroy your stuff.
Take the snakeskin to someone that can identify it. If you have a zoo nearby, there should be someone there, or you might try calling a local vet's office.

What you've most probably seen was a molting. A snake sheds its' skin (molts) as it gets larger. If you can take another look at the skin and compare it to pictures from a book or on the internet. NC has a variety of venomous snakes that you'll want to avoid. Call your local authorities and see what can be done about getting the snake removed.
If the snake has molted in your shed it WILL be back.
Under no circumstances should you try to handle this yourself.

Abby is the only responder that knows what she is talking about. By "was shedding" do you really mean was getting ready to shed or that it actually was shedding. Snakes do not eat their sheds. That is something that some lizards do. kaly can't read, you are looking for a skin, not a snake and I am sure you didn't let your dog into your snakes cage like albert thinks. EDIT Sarah has also been there.

Get high, get drunk, get laid. What's the problem? Just because you found the shed skin, doesn't mean the snake is still around. If the skin was that big, the snake should be easy enough to see & avoid.

Well you know that you have Snakes...........You need to go to your local Kmart, Wal mart, Home Depot or like that and get a bag of Lime and put it around the perimeter of your property and then the house and buildings.....This will prevent another snake from coming on to your property but you will still have to be careful as this will NOT get rid of any already there!

Stop panicking.
The snake is probably as afraid of you.
Go in, stamp around noisily and it probaly will go away.
Have the skin examined. Maybe it's not poisonous, in the meantime:
Don't go groping around your shed in the night, or stick your fingers where you can't see.
Accidents happen...
