The independent variable would be the variable that you think causes a change in the dependent variable.
The dependent variable depends on the independent variable (does that make sense)

For instance if you were looking at the relationship between age and alcohol consumption you would think that age may impact how much you drink but how much you drink can not change how old you are.

So in this case.

Age is independent of alcohol intake.
Alcohol intake is dependent on age.

So you would test this theory and see if the evidence supports this theory or not.

an independent variable supports it self and a dependent variable depends on other variables to be supported
