The engine is too new to know what problems might need to be worked out for next year's models. Since it is essentially a Twin Cam 88 with a bore kit rather than an entire redesign like the change from the Evo to Twin Cam, there shouldn't be any problems associated with it. The noise you have heard about is from the 6-speed transmission. They whine a bit more than the 5-speed but work fine.

Don't even dignify the answers from Bruth or the other idiot. There are no problems with the 96, and if there are with yours, it'll be taken care of. HD ALWAYS honors their warranty, if anything happens. Harleys are just characteristically noisy, and with the stock pipes you hear it all. Don't worry about it' just ride and enjoy. Louder pipes will improve performance and drown out the sounds you're hearing. With the 07, as well as the 06 you'll need a power commander or a DFO (easier). On my 06 (still 88, but similar in exhaust/fuel delivery setup) I thought it was noisy, but as soon as I put on different pipes (go to Ebay and look for B&E pipes, or a seller named BOBVICR), a DFO from Revtech and a high flow air filter setup (kit with new backing plate, not just the filter) she's a different animal performance wise, and I hear nothing derogatory from the motor. BTW, I did all this myself for around 400 bucks; HD will charge 1200 for the stage one and it won't be nearly the same result. Don't even listen to those twerps who try to put HD down; they are insignificant little mosquitoes.

Three things I would change when you buy the bike.

1.Put a Vance & Hines Fuel Pak or Power commander on it.
2.K&N Air filter
3.Any kind of pipes that you like, such as the ones the other member said. I like the Sampson Pipes, they work well.

Also get your self a Catalogue from J&P Cycles.

It *shouldn't* have stalled, but it did, right? The smoking is weird because that usually means an oil leak, but puddles don't cause oil leaks. Obviously, if your windshield is getting wet, there's a lot of water being thrown around and it's getting to the ignition system. You didn't say what year your truck is, or if it has electronic ignition or an older-style breaker distributor. These seemingly insignificant details actually do matter.

It sounds like your hobbit that turns the crank case is depressed and needs therapy. You need you--get you a new hobbit. They's from the land beyond time. Land beyond time is also gonna hook us up with a unicorn for the radiator. I ain't even gonna tell ya about that haunted air conditioner. Plus, the air filter? That's made of plutonium. That's gonna involve Superman, so...ya know, plus shipping from Krypton. And the cow..jumped over the moon.

I would wait a few years before buying a 96. If you remember when the 88s came out, the cam bearing were blowing apart quite frequently. I am planning on giving them a few years to get the bugs worked out first.

Only wussies buy Jap cruisers. Anyway, Harleys have character, and one of their traits is random noises that make no sense, have no meaning, and are utterly impossible to troubleshoot. If it bothers you, throw on some V&H pipes and all you'll hear is the big V-Twin doing what it does best.
