Uh, define "real world"? But seriously, mathematics and physics are "real world" and abs values comes into play through out them. Similarly, programming is a real world activity and absolute values are used for various reasons. A simple example in "every day life" is when a carpenter cuts a board 2 inches too short or too long and then remarks "I'm off by 2 inches".

In many real processes you have to find a solution to a problem and this solution is the limit of a sequence of real numbers or vectors. ince it's usaully impossible to find this solution in a finite number of steps, you set up a tolerance eps, that is, from a practical point of view youre problem is solved if, after the n_th step you have |a_n - a| < eps, wher a_n is your estimate for the n_th step and a is the real solution, which yiu don't know. This is called convergence and is used in a number of real world processes.
