Economic necessity will hold a couple together. In the USA there is no economic necessity to hold a couple together as each adult can make it on his or her own.
Why we have a high divorce rate is that no one bothers to teach children character education. Thus adults don't know how to behave in a reasonable fashion. They don't have any standards. Also they haven't been taught communication and negotiation skills so they have difficulty resolving their conflicts. For many situations, there is more than one way to go about it and there can be unresolvable differences between the two people. Also sometimes people agree at the outset, but someone changes direction. An example would be if two people each wanted children but then one realizes that he/she doesn't want any children.

Many factors:
(note - some people may have said this, so I apologize if I seem like I'm parroting)
*high cost of living forcing both couples to work - they spend less time together, and therefore lose any emotional bond
*its very easy to file for divorce nowadays (esp. for women), a pretty dumb example is 'incompatibility'
*higher expectations due to the media - people are constantly fed with images of near-perfect, beautiful people. when a man and a woman live together, they realize that both are human and pretty far from perfection - so disappointment results

Because divorces are an easy way out in the USA, in other countries it's much more difficult.

No fear of God anymore ,and what his word says on the subject, lust of the flesh,no morals, its like monkey see monkey do in the world today, we see someone else doing something we have always heard was wrong, but we think well, he is doing it so it must be OK, but thats not going to be the case when the judgement day comes, people are gonna wish they had ben faithful.

because the cost of living in America is very expensive so some time people have to get a second job just to make ends meet and they do gets another job they don't have the time for their partner, and that makes the other partner feels like they are been neglected or not worth the other persons time.

Celebrities. They all divorce in like a year (look at Britany Spears, she was only married for a day) therefore everyone else does it, too.

People think about marriage as a throw away decision, instead of taking their vows to heart. Instead of dealing with problems and working them out. They would just as soon walk away and pretend they arent there. Its like its disposable, and that "for better or worse...till death do us part"....really dont have meaning. Its sad, but true. I believe if we would all communicate better and stop being so selfish, then we would have longer marriages like our grandparents and their grandparents had.

In our materialistic, fast-paced society, marriage has lost its meaning as a sacred institution for many. It is just a convenience or a temporary declaration of a relationship. The vows are just ceremonial for a lot of people.
