Yes they should. After all scrounging is bad enough but not having the decency to know the language is proof of how little you intend to add to the country. Anyone coming into the UK should learn English and only use English.

Absolutely. It's the exact same thing for the US. We have a plague of illegal immigrants flooding in from Mexico. These people want to live here, but aren't motivated enough to learn English,to the point where we now have signs in English and Spanish. Learn f**king english or leave.

I think yes, on the grounds that if there was a major incident they would be able to understand what was going on because they are able to speak our language.

Also its great to learn another language and looks fab on the old 'CV'.

I think they should make an effort, they know the way here, they manage to get what they need to survive. Moving house is meant to be one of the most stressful things to do - never mind moving to another country!
I wonder on a scale of one to ten how stressful a new language is?

Just recently I went to Paris to see Madonna I didn't do french at school, (funnily enough it was spanish!) and I made a great effort to do a six week course in french, it did the trick we ended up with a free bottle of pinot grigio in the french restaurant!

If they don't want to learn English then they shouldn't be here. How do they expect to communicate with officials etc. Where I live we have many nationalities and we speak English as the common language. If somebody cant speak the language it is up to english speakers to teach and help them in order for them to fit into our society.

Yes they should! Otherwise how would they communicate? They need to learn how to speak, read and write in English. It allows for them to be independent while also enjoy communicating to others and making friends! Otherwise, they remain stuck in their community with no outlet with a country and its people, the place they now call home.

Absolutely, yes. And when we go to live in foreign countries, we should be made to learn their languages, too. Then the whole world would integrate better.

Is there anyone living in Britain who doesn't need at least some English? (even in Wales or the Hebrides...)

Any immigrant who intends to stay for any length of time is going to need english to achieve their goals...even immigrant 'scroungers', how many or few of those really exist!
