I realized after I did this that the instructions said to fully charge it your first time. Does this really affect battery life length in the future, or can I just fully charge it for 4 hrs tonight and it will be the same?

just cahrge it when you get back home. THey say to do this and that but in the end you should always allow it to fully die then you should fully charge it. Never half charge it.

The batteries they give us are only meant to last so long, if there was a secret to keeping the life longer then they would never make any money on us when we had to re-buy a newer battery. Same as cell phones

I always follow the manufacturer's instructions in particular as it relates to batteries as such I have far fewer problems I heard of one person who failed to do that with a (brand name withheld) mp3 music player short-circuiting the battery making the unit explode since then he has stopped tinkering with wiring in his portable electronics. I would go to the http://www.apple.com/support website and ask them they'll have a better idea as it regard your concerns about your purchase of their product.
