any computer is economical

Any computer on the market these days can do video editing. I did all mine on a P3 650Mhz with 512MB RAM until last year.

All you need is a firewire port (to transfer from digital camera), a huge hard drive (video takes up a lot of space), and perhaps a USB capture device if you don't havea digital camera with firewire.

Judging by your question, you are new to this, so don't spend a lot of money on something you may not fully use.

In today's market, I would recommend a basic entry level computer similar to the Dells, Gateways, or Compaqs you see advertised all the time - with a couple upgrades.

1) Get a Pentium D or Core Duo instead of the Celeron D for the CPU

2) Upgrade to 1GB RAM at least

3) Get at least 80GB hard drive if not more. Most times you can add a second drive when you order.

4) Make sure you get a DVD Burner, not just the CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive.

5) Firewire or IEEE 1394 port.

You don't need to order from the companies I mentioned, but they are a good place to start looking to see how much it is going to cost you.

They type of system with upgrades I listed above should run you about $700.

Any PC with a firewire port, a video card with MPEG acceleration, DVD burner, a large hard drive, and video editing software will work great and won't be too expensive.

Here's a ballpark price for a sample system:

Pentium 4 2.8 GHz processor
$80

Motherboard w/ onboard firewire port
$80

1GB DDR RAM
$100

DVD+-RW
$40

Hard Drive 200GB
$80

Case and power supply
$60

Video card
NVIDIA GeForce 6200
ATI Radeon 9600
ATI Radeon X300 PCIE
$40

Approx: $480
