A friend gave me his old laptop. When I first got it, the screen was flickering a lot. Now the screen is blank. It is still backlit and is just whitish-grayish. I can adjust the brightness of the screen, but it doesn't display anything.

If you have a Geek Squad nearby (inside Best Buy), you can take it in and they'll do an on-site analysis for free. If they have to ship it out for repairs, it's non-refundable $50. If you decide to have them fix it after getting the estimate, the $50 will apply to your bill. But in my area (Chicago suburbs) it was going to take 2-3 weeks just to get the estimate, and longer to fix the screen.

FYI, mine went almost completely black, and it turned out that there's a single piece that needs to be replaced. For this they'd probably charge me about $200, and I'm sure most of it is labor because it took Geek Squad about 10 minutes just to remove all the screws and tabs that hold the screen in place. It's pretty intricate in there.

But I was also able to hook up to an old monitor and keyboard, and use the laptop as a CPU.

Most likely. A laptop LCD screen is so expensive that it will cost more then your old laptop is worth. Hook a monitor up to it and use it as a desktop machine.

Probably. But you can hook a regular monitor to it and use it like that if you wish.
