I have done a release and renew and it says "The DHCP Client has obtained an IP adress that is already in use on teh network. The local interface will be disabled until the DHCP client can obtain a new adress" What should I do next? I mean it works fine if I assign a static IP but once I take that off it won't work. Any suggestions?

Reset the router.

Using a static IP means that you would have to set everyone up on your network with that static IP. You would probably be forced to assign DSN records as well. It is best to use DHCP, even though you have these intermittent problems.

If your router is expanded with an ethernet hub, you might want to buy a new high speed ethernet switch. Also, look at the hub port lights to see if any of these indicators are detecting data collisions. Try using other ethernet ports if you suspect that any of these have gone bad.

This requires a bit of investigation. Someone could be using a static ip address from the range assigned to router for DHCP. Or possibly, the router is assigning an ip address that it shows the lease has expired, but the original client is still using it. Time to contact the network admin and have them investigate.

that means someone else has the ip address that your router is trying to give you.
is there any one else on your network in your home? disconnect them from the router then do a release renew and see if that fixes it. then after you get your IP address get them back on the network and see if they can get an IP. if they get the same error you did dhcp is not working right on that router. but if it works with static IP's why not give everyone a static address and then have no problems. good luck

Sounds like the dhcp settings on your router are messed up. How many devices do you have allowed in your router?

I was always having problems with my wireless until I installed Network Magic and then secured my network. If you have Linksys, they will help you.

do this

go to command prompt.

type in netsh
type in dump

it will dump your tcp/ip stack.

after that restart pc and your pc should pull new ip by dhcp.

also most likely what helps is uninstalling tcp/ip protocol and reinstalling it back by going to properties of your connection.

btw where do you get your ip from? router? if so , change that router because obiously could give you same ip on the network and that's bad router.
