It turns out that it was a small 1" rubber hose on one of the vacuum pipe connectors that had split. I had previously taken the car to a Vauxhall dealership who plugged the car into thier computer and told me that they had no idea what the problem was. They told me they would have to spend some time trying to trave the fault at £40 an hour labour charge. I took the car toa small garage who diagnosed the problem without even having to lift the bonnet, based on what I had told him. He charged me £10. He said that it was one of the most common faults with these cars. That said, I am now of the opinion that the Vauxhall dealer was aware of the problem and was holding out to relieve me of as much cash as possible. BE WARY OF MAIN DEALERS!!!!!
