Yes, I was shocked. I was 17 and at my grandmother's and we heard it on the tv. She went into the kitchen and I found her there crying like she had lost a family member. That was just as shocking to me...to feel that much for someone whom you had never met. I had liked some of his music, but after realizing how much my Nan loved him, I became a big fan.
Were you shocked when you heard Princess Diana was killed in the car crash? The world was just that shocked when Elvis died.

I was born the EXACT day after Elvis died, August 17th, 1977 (as he died on the 16th). So no, I was not shocked, not from what I can recall anyway...
My mother was upset that she could not go the opening of the new mall because her water broke...she never mentioned Elvis/dead emotions (she was more of a Beatles fan).

Looking back on it we probably all should have seen it coming but it was still a shock at the time. Back then they downplayed his out-of-control prescription drug use and we didn't know about bad eating ramifications as much as we do now. It is still a little shocking when a man that young dies on the toilet.

I wasn't as shocked at his death as I was by the worldwide reaction to his death - I was born while Elvis was in the army, The Beatles hit when I was in kindergarten, and for me Elvis wasn't the potent force he was to everybody older than me - I hadn't lost the avatar of rock'n'roll, I'd just lost an actor who made awesomely bad movies - it wasn't until later that the depth of the tragedy was revealed.

I was in the 1st grade. I wasn't shocked...probably still too young to recognize his cultural contributions, but I remember being bewildered by all the hype and the outpouring of intense emotion.

Yes, I was. I was working at Jamesway Department Store, in Shipping and Receiving. There was a package that day that had stamped on it, " Return to Sender". I started singing that song, and a co-worker said, "you know he died today?" It was a shocker. I remember that day like it was yesterday.

Yes. But not as shocked as I was to hear the Steve Irwin died. May God bless his wife and children.

I was young when he died, but yes I was shocked and sad. My parents loved his music and I grew up listening to it.
