The advantage is you don't need a mouse pad and you don't have to worry about the ball getting dirty or jammed. The disadvantage is you can't use it on class and some mouse have batteries that drain very quickly because some designers are not thinking about the consumer.

Traditional mice have a ball on the bottom that they use to sense the movements you make. Infra mice have a red light, and no ball. The light reflects on the surface and senses movements. The mouse can be on any surface, it`ll work just as good.
I prefer infra mice because they are more precise and you don`t have to clean them like the old mice. Disadvantages? Don`t know any. They are called optical mouse. There are two types. Normal optical that use a cord to connect to the computer and radio optical that have no cord and connect to the computer through radio waves. I like this since you are not tied to the pc, and can move all around the room using your mouse. The radio mice use batteries that last for about 3 months.

I will never go back to the ball and roller style. Chordless for 12 months now and love it as well.
