Id like to take a few souveniers of Britain with me on my trip to Tokyo, to give to anyone I meet on my trip...what kind of things would be suitable?

Postcards? Key-rings?

Ive hear such gift giving is common in Japan.

It is a common courtesy. (Especially if you visit someone at their house, bring something to give.)

Most anything will be considered suitable. They will appreciate the thought. Something either made in England/Europe would be appropriate.

If it isn't very small, when you hand it to your Japanese friends, hand it with both hands (like you will see them do with business cards.) It is more polite.

Having said all that, it sounds like you are really trying - that will be appreciated in and of itself.

Have a great time.

Usually people give small things to the people that we know we will see. For example after each business trip I take, I usually buy a box or two of candy or cookies for my office. It ends up that everyone will receive one small thing. Costs are minimal. If you give something of any value, they will feel a little guilty and obligated to return the favor. I visted London twice on business and both times a brought back a box of cookies that I bought at Heathrow. The same was given to friends and they were happy to receive it. Nothing fancy. On the flip side, Japanese visiting my in the USA would bring me senbei and mochi.

It is very common for Japanese to give eachother gifts of food, especially food that is a specialty in the area they are from. So coming from England I would recommend something like shortbread, any chocolates that have a recognisable "Made in England" label, English labeled jars of jam, and of course Japanese love tea, as apparently so do the British.
Good luck

I agree with Enrico. Japanese loves food and their packaging is awesome. Jams, cookies and tarts makes good gifts.
