Students do poorly in school, first of all, because teachers can't teach or communicate properly... teachers became teachers because standards were lowered for them to pass, just as the standards are now lower for students... the expectations for students have gone down so students don't have the competitive drive they did years ago. Teachers can barely speak or write intelligently nowadays! They grunt and stutter and stammer with "you know, you know and you know... uh,,, uh...uh..." and "know what I mean, know what I mean...?" HOW can they expect to teach if they can't communicate in the first place? How can they ever dare expect to make kids take exams (SATs for example) that they cannot pass themselves?
American kids can't even communicate intelligently but that's what they learn from their teachers that also can't communicate intelligently!
I blame the unions that defend the incompetent and inept teachers and Vice Principles (and some Principles, too) that are so terrible that no school wants them but can't get rid of them... these are the teachers that do more harm than good... they make it difficult for other teachers and for all students that cross paths with them. But, first unions and then their political cronies and all the shenanigans that go on in the schools systems is just shameful! No wonder American kids cannot compete with European students (Russian high school kids doing biology, chemistry and math that our college kids can't do). The system is corrupt as a result of the politicos and unions. That's basically the biggest problem and obstacle to correcting the problems in education!

I don't have an article, but the reasons are high school students don't do well is because our govt is stupid with this "no child left behind" crap, it promotes pushing a child forward when they should be held back.
Our educational funding is weak at best ( compare this to the military budget which is huge).
And our children's home lives have deteriorated in the past 30 years. Parents blame the schools when really it is there poor parenting skills.
We need more funding for schools and we need parents to give a darn about their children's education.

Students do badly in school because they can't please anybody. No one, as the student sees it, seems to care enough to demand that the student perform in school such that significant people are pleased. Teachers are resentful because they can't please Administration and are constantly scrutinized. Also, they will only see the student briefly and if they can get rid of them somehow, one more problem solved. Parents take little interest in school for a variety of reasons, time, fatigue, bad school experience, drugs, etc.

Students do poorly in high school because they aren't challenged enough to do well.
