what is the purpose of a.m. and p.m.?

so that u would know the time
there r wo ways, either the 24 hours system, where u have hour 1 ,2 3, .... 24 or u can have the am pm system
1 - 12 am (in the other system that would be 1 -12, thats mostly late night and morning)
1-12 pm (in the other system that would be 13-24, thats noon till midnight)

When using the 12 hour clock system, it is used to distinguish between the early part of the day (from midnight to noon) and the later part (Midday to Midnight)

If you have an appointment at 8 and the other person does not specify AM or PM you would be in a dilemma. Do I go in the morning or evening?

to tell you if it's morning or evening. some places have either long days or long nights, so some people cannot tell what time of day it is

so when you tell someone what time it is they know weather it is morning or night if i said it is 8 o'clock here would you know what time of the day?
