If you're referring to LOST, which I think you are, it was the same metal thing that got Locke. Whatever dinosaur thing that happens to be roaming the island at random.
I just watched the episode and it just grabbed him out of the airplane. There wasn't any smoke and the Others couldn't reach him since the planes nose was too far off the ground. The creature had to be pretty tall.

I have a theory, but no facts.
I think it was the polar bear, though I'm not sure how it could have dragged the pilot out the windshield at that angle. (And that's only if I'm remembering it right).
