Try Umea, Sweden for a great small town.

Sollentuna is nice, in places, used to work there, not sure I would personally like to live there, but you aren't me. The southern side and the islands are nice too, Nacka, Boo, Lidingö. That's where I'd live if I had to live in Stockholm.

My partner works in Västberga, and used to live there too, and liked it well enough, but he was single and childless back then, so that probably isn't much of a recommendation. He is a bit of a snob though, so I can at least tell you it's probably a safe area to live (or was, ten years ago). That probably came out wrong, I hope you know what I mean by it :)

BTW, the helpful person who mentioned Umeå didn't point out that it's about 8 hours drive from Stockholm :)

If you don't mind a commute say, (30-40 minutes, less by train) there's a lot of wonderful small towns down around Mariefred, Södertalje, that whole road out towards Strängnäs and Eskilstuna is full of cute little villages. Who couldn't love to live in a place called "Åkes Styckebruk". That's where I live (in a small town on the south side of the Mälaren lake, not in Åkes Styckebruk, although it's not too far from there). Great place to have kids, near enough Stockholm to be able to go out for an evening, or a day of shopping or culture, not unreasonable travel time to work, great public transport too.

I dunno though, I stay out of the 'burbs mostly, if I'm going into town, it's to do city things, in the middle of the city. And "what's a good place to live" is quite a subjective and personal thing. Hopefully if you get lots of (sensible, not Umeå) answers, you'll get a concensus.

For people with money: Enskede, Värmdö, Sollentuna, Farsta, Bromma (some areas)

For people with even more money: Lidingö, Danderyd

These are neigborhoods near stockholm but not very close to the city centre. There are good areas there to, but it's hard to talk about certain areas as "better" than others. (And really, i have no experience of actually living there)
