I think that birthdays are a celebration of life in general and being born not a celebration of getting old.

You must either be (1) very young, or (2), any age and cynical...Birthdays are a way of celebrating surviving one more year on this earth, against all odds, whether you think you are celebrating luck, good fortune, or God's grace. The more birthdays celebrated, the better!

This one gets me too. I must admit my 21st and 40 th meant something to me but none of the others. I can't understand why some people talk about their birthdays weeks or even months before. I share the same birthday as my partner at work and he couldn't believe I wasn't interested in tossing a coin to see who would get the day off. I told him to have it off as I'm really not interested. I remember one year, I must have been about 31 or something and someone asked me when my birthday was. After a few moments thought I replied, yesterday. It had came and went and I wasn't even conscious of it. Everyone I know knows not to bother me with birthday nonsense.

We like to mark anniversary's, the anniversary of our birth is just one of many dates that we like to commemorate. Its a good way of keeping and understanding our place in time.
You may as well ask why do we need to mark New Year, again, its immaterial in the big picture, the world doesn't know or care about the date, the whole annual calendar is a human concept. The annual calender shouldn't be confused with the seasonal calender, this is set by natural occurrences.
To give you an example, it wouldn't matter if you woke up tomorrow and it was 2005, or if it was 2006. It would still be tomorrow.

Because the older you are, the wiser you are. You have survived another year and hopefully lived it to the fullest. Also, it's like celebrating a holiday. The day you were brought into the world was a special one for many people (yourself, parents, siblings, etc...) Why do we celebrate Christmas? 4th of July? They are all significant events of the past.

We are celebrating the day when we get presents from your friends. We also celebrate the fact that we could survive another year in this stupid world

I don't celebrate getting old. I celebrate that I made it through another year. And it's a silly excuse to eat as much cake and drink as much beer as I want without feeling guilty.

We celebrate the fact that we've made yet another trip around the sun. Life is the celebration.

Beats the alternative!
A birthday celebration means you aren't dead! I hope to celebrate my life for many more years to come.

Only a young person could ask that question. Being old can be really cool especially if you're smart and handsome like me (LOL).
Celebrate everything. Breathing is cool. Celebrate Bart Simpson... or how about International 'I like just being me'Day? :)
