There's a cow field across the way from my house out of 8 cows 3 are sat and 5 are standings all in different directions.

Usually they face the direction of the wind. After all in those exposed fields it can get a bit draughty up the rear quarters

Normally, they do this when there is an impending storm. And, if so they will not turn in any other direction, except facing away from the wind.

Usually they stand facing away from the prevailing winds.
And in winter will be in the warmest place they can find, like wise in the summer the coolest.

THEY DON'T UNLESS THERE IS A STORM COMING, IF THEY ARE AL GOING THE SAME DIRECTION THEY ARE JUST HEADING TO THE SAME FEEDING AREA,

i know they sit when it rains to keep their grass under them dry so they have food!
