Ok, I'm a man. I'm oblivious. I'm totally ignorant of a woman's cycle. Now I got that out of the way, what is the most opportune time to procreate - i.e. when does a woman ovulate? Shortly before or shortly after her period? Need details please! Thanks!

Ovulation is supposed to occur around the 14th day of the menstrual cycle, with the first day of the period being day 1 of the cycle. An unfertilized egg will live for about 3 days, as do most sperm. The optimal time for sex in order to conceive is between day 11 and day 16, although it is apparently easier to conceive during the earlier part of the fertile time. If you want a simpler method, just do it within the first two weeks after her period ends.

you are charting your menstrual cycles, you should look for a sharp rise in your temperature around the time of ovulation as you enter the luteal phase of your cycle. This rise in temperature is usually at least .4 of a degree over your first phase temperatures. This is one reason why charting your menstrual cycle can really help you get pregnant, because not every woman ovulates according to the generic 14 day window most books and people will talk about.
