Hezbollah(Arabic: meaning “party of God”) is a Shia Islamist organization in Lebanon comprising a militia, a political party, and an extensive program of social development. It was formed during the 1982 Lebanon War, and officially announced on February 16, 1985 when Sheik Ibrahim al-Amin declared the group's manifesto which included three goals: the eradication of Western Imperialism in Lebanon, the transformation of Lebanon's multi-confessional state into a Islamic state, and the complete destruction of the state of Israel. Hezbollah has abandoned the goal of transforming Lebanon into an Islamic republic, but continues to call for the elimination of “the Zionist entity” (i.e. Israel).

Hezbollah is a national resistance movement that started after the Israeli invasion and occupation of Lebanon in 1983. Thus, it was born as an answer to Israeli aggression and subjugation of other peoples. The US and israel have a misguided notion that every one and every thing that acts in self-defense is a "terrorist" organization if it goes in opposition to Israeli or US policy. If Israel commits exactly the same acts as Hezbollah then the US and Israel call that "self defense", but if hezbollah commits the same identical acts then this is called "terrorism" by the US and Israel. The fuss is really all about US and Israeli hypocrisy; most of the use of the term "terrorist" should really be applied to Israeli/Jewish/Zionist actions over the past 80 to 90 years, all of which began with the British issuance of the Balfour Declaration in November of 1917.

Hesbollah was created shortly after the Jews re-claimed Israel in 1949 - it was the Arab's reaction to being kicked out of what they thought was their home. It has evolved (or de-volved) into a terrorist organization bent on ridding the middle east of the Jews and taking back the territory.

That's the Cliff notes of it.
