Bit of self hypnosis going on there I think. Though why he would need candles and a mirror for that is beyond me. Sounds more like scrying than hypnosis or even a very vivid imagination !

Candles, and fire have this sort of weird effect sometimes. When it was late at camping I found myself staring into the fire and feeling realy calm.
Perhaps the way the flame moves it has some hypotysing effect. i'm afraid I can't help about mirrors though.

Very scary so just don't do it or you might wake up one morning with a mirror in one hand and candle wax all over the place and wonder what your doing.
