I ran into this problem myself, and like everyone else here, I would point the problem at the type of media (blank DVD's) that you are using. I suggest using a good brand of DVD-R's the next time you record something. DVD-R's play across a wider variety of DVD players than DVD+r's.

Be sure you are using DVD+R or DVD-R, not RW. Newer players are supposed to be able to read the RW discs of either type, but these are much harder to read than the record-once (R) type, so any little defect or fingerprint can make it unreadable on some players

Besides finalizing them, your friends must also have a compatible DVD player. There are 3 types of recordable DVDs:
DVD-RAM, DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW. If your friends DVD player can only play DVD+R/RW and you recorded it on a DVD-R/RW disc, then your friend couldn't play it. Some DVD recorders handle all 3 formats.

newer players play more of the various formats.

take a good dvd down to a video store, if they can't play it.... it's probably recorded as a data dvd.

Make sure that you "Finalize the recorded DVD on your player first". I believe it is in Disc Utilities.
