Do i need to format the dvd-r or something so i can use it and how can i fix it to be able to be used?

If you have a problem in reading dvds. And you can read cds normally, then the following solution may apply.

Window media player does not have the MPEG-2 codec and a dvd decoder in it, you have to install another dvd player such as Intervideo home theatre, or power dvd etc. These softwares often are given away in a software cd that comes with the computer or the dvd drive. Once you install one of these, windows media player will play DVDs.

Or you have to install one of the dvd decoder plugins given on microsoft's website below.

Same thing happened to me not long. The drive was shot. It had to be replaced.
