Most people would kill for a job like that where they get paid under the table!

It is what they call off the books, or working black, the money in slang is given under the table, no record for the employer no record for the employee, actually it is great because you don't have to pay any taxes and any money you have paid you get back. Employers do it for different reasons, one big one is they don't have to pay with holding tax or workers comp, but if she has not agreed to it, they are really taking a chance because if she got mad at them could take them to the labor board, big fine $10,000.00 for starters......Big companies can not get away with it just small shops. because they have a lot of merchandise they buy for cash and it never shows! Like a bar owner who buy's whiskey retail at a liquor store, not legal, his way of stealing from Uncle Sam!

That's not the way it's done. Where the money comes from is not a concern, but a payslip is because it states tax, pension, company insurance and other details and is also evidence that your daughter has had experience working in retail

They can pay cash (even in check form). Did she get a 1099 form at tax time? This would show what she was paid for the year then she has to pay all that taxes on this money. But I think they do have to give her a stub.

I can't be sure because your wording implies you aren't American, but i'd assume that something fishy was going on. If your daughter is being paid under the table, then the company that is working for her is likely frauding the government by not paying the due taxes.

I think if the company got caught they would be in trouble, your daughter depending on how much she makes, could have to pay back taxes. If she doesn't make enough in a year she doesn't have to even claim her earnings. You might want to check it out in your state.
I think I would probably say they either need to start paying her and taking taxes out or she will find a new job.

This is illegal. Companies have to keep detailed records of employees and it appears they are not. Also, with them paying her "off the books" they are not taking out her taxes and social security. She could either report them to the IRS or move on to another job.

Ask the citizens advice bureau though if she's getting cash in hand she's not paying tax therefore she could have to pay back tax

I recommend your daughter immediately resign. She'll balk but explain she is responsible for 15% of her total income for taxes. The employer is legally responsible, but they're obviously not going to do it. The IRS still expects their share.

Once she has resigned, she can turn them in for fraud. But it's probably not worth it at her age to get embroiled in someone else's tax fraud.

Definitely get out now....
