True muscle cars are American made (AMC, Chevrolet, Dodge, Ford and Plymouth) two-door sedans, coupes or convertibles. These cars were built from 1964 to 1974. They were equipped with high-performance V-8 engines coupled to heavy-duty manual or automatic transmissions and a heavy-duty rear-end (differential) from the factory.
A pseudo-muscle car is a car of the same vintage and style, but equipped with non-performance oriented engine, transmission and rear-end from the factory. Pseudo-muscle cars have been modified (over the years) to emulate a true muscle car.
To the untrained individual there is no difference between the two. A true collector or conniseur knows the difference.
The "gas crunch" in the early 70's and stricter vehicle exhaust emission regulations killed off the muscle car.
