Using Q-Tips.

2006-09-12 01:24:33 · answer #1 · answered by Dr Dee 7 · 1 1

Q-Tips are definitely not a good option; most doctors will tell you that this will stuff the wax further down the ear canal and might eventually damage the ear drum.

There are several possible solutions; you'll find some specific products at the pharmacy (Cerumol, Cerumenex, etc) that'll help soften and remove the wax.
Home-made remedies such as peroxyde diluted in water (as previously mentioned by another user) or baby oil/mineral oil can also be used (a few drops in the affected ear canal for 2-3 days). These usually will get the job done and are relatively cheap.

If the wax remains hard and difficult to remove after a few days, a doctor will remove it for you with the proper instruments.

You shouldn't use q-tips in your ears. if you go to far in you can damage your ear permanently. You can also push wax in further, as someone else had mentioned. Get Debrox or another wax removal product from the pharmacy. A few drops in the ear and it dissolves the wax away.

I have this same problem. Once a year I go to the ENT or General Practictioner to have my ears cleaned out. Some docs have a machine that suck out the wax-not painful at all. Others will squirt warm water into the ear with some pressure-doesn't hurt either.

Q-tips can sometimes oush the wax further into your ear.

You can also mix hydrogen peroxide and water and tilt your head na pour a bit into your ears, let it sit for a bit and then turn your head to drain it in the sink. Do this on both sides and it will help disolve the wax and clear your ears.

Go to the drug store and pick up some "Debrox Ear Drops". It's not expensive and it usually works. Some times you need to do the treatment more than once

Hot water in them for a few seconds, or if its that bad go see your doctor to have them syringed - there is also something you can get from the chemist thats like a plastic device that you pump air into your ears with and it dislodges it.

A chemist has drops or a Dr may wash them out if its real bad, thats if they still do today, I have had it done & it doesn't hurt, just feels strange while it's being done.
