Stem cells and what they can do for sick people is a medical miracle yet the Bush government stands on some high religious pedestal and says not in our backyards. If not in America where then? Are we going to wait while some other country in the world like Sweden develops this technology then they can have all the jobs and money from people who want to use this miracle of life? Ponce de Leon searched for the fountain of youth and this could be it but Mr. Bush in all his infinite wisdom says NO WAY! Does he or any other politician have this right?

to wmcritter, Is this a rant? I thought I was asking a question and by the way many people out there can benefit from the answers these questions generate. Thanks for your response. Do you always think questions are examples of rants?

To Q-burt, Bush's actions have put a damper on stem cell research and maybe you can tell me why there is presently a senate committee inquiry underway on this same subject? If Bush said that the government is going to put money into wind farms to offset oil dependency the wind stocks would go through the roof. When he made statements about stem cells most stocks in that area dropped. If the Federal government stayed completely out of the fray then I would be totally happy but like Iraq and Afghanistan they keep getting their noses into places they should not be in.

Yes, but until someone close to him suffers from a disease that could be helped by stem cell research he will never change his stance. He is so sure he is right that he ignores the fact that the majority of the country does not believe what he does. Don't elected people always promise to fullfill the wishes of the people? It is hard to watch people suffer needlessly when you know there is something out there that could potentially help them and your president puts his own beliefs ahead of the nations.

Ok, now your just talking ignorance. Show me one shred of evidence where Bush is STOPPING stem cell research. You can't because he isn't.
Here is what he did do. He vetoed the federal funding of stem cell research. If you think that is a horrible thing then you are only kidding yourself. The low income Pharmacudicle companies pull in between 100 million and 600 million a year. The big boys are pulling 3 to 6 billion in a quarter.
Why then, do they need federal funding for stem cell research? Why should my tax dollar go to research where I will never see a return for my money? Why would I want to pay for the research of a product someone else will make the money on? Someone who already makes billions.
You fly up here waving your hate stick and don't even know the whole story. Get educated and come back.
Edit:
Paul
you are comparing Apples to Oranges here. Energy and Stem cell research are two completely different animals. Power is a necessity while stem cell research is a project. The money made from the research should the government fund it goes to the Pharmacudicles, not us. We only get over-charged.
Stem cell research is only "dampered" because the pharmacuticles don't want to put their take home pay into the research. Supporting politicians want it federally funded because they will get a kick back from the pharmicuticles for supporting their agenda. Ultimately, we pay the price.
I am all for stem cell research. When it matures and i have to pay for it, I don't want to have paid for it once already through taxes.
Let the Pharmacuticles do the research.

What are you talking about? You sound like you got your info from Air America - all ranting, no facts.
If you were interested in the TRUTH in the least [which I doubt], you would have taken the time and effort to actually educate yourself on the facts of the matter.
Bush is not only funding stem cell research - adult, placental and blood stem cells - but he was also the first president to fund embryonic stem cell research. He funded some already existing lines of embryonic stem cells, with the caveat that the government would not fund any more new lines created by the destruction of embryos.
He didn't stop anybody from embryonic stem cell research, he just said the government won't be funding it.
And the rest of the facts are that there has been no treatments developed from embryonic stem cells, and there is none in development in the near future. All current and near term treatments are based on the other stem cell research.
But, hey, don't let facts or truth get in the way of your anti-Bush zealotry.

You (like many people) are uninformed.
President Bush, contrary to popular media opinion, has not banned stem cell research.
All he has done has proposed that the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT not FUND the research.
The majority of medical research is privately funded. Why should stem cells be like HIV/AIDS. Why not Muscular Dystrophy? Why not cancer? Why not autism? Why not let the Fed fund all the medical research??
Duh. There isn't enough money in the budget for the government to fund everything. Liberal idiots are just using stem cell research as a standard in a very devious smear campaign.
Politics! Uuuuuggghhhhh!

You have it wrong. President Bush does not, and cannot, prevent the development of stem cell research. He can, and I agree with him, refuse to authorize giving federal grants to laboratories doing research on embryonic stem cells.
If people want to do research on anything, they should do it on their own and not lobby the US government for money every time they think up a good idea.
Research is being done on adult stem cells, and they are proving more useful than embryonic. Before you complain about anything, do adequate research and get your facts straight.
I infer, from your writing, that you are more interested in Bush bashing than you are interested in asking legitimate questions.

Not at all. All Bush has done has limited FEDERAL spending on stem cells.
Stem cell research is such a sure thing? Why do the medical companies not invest in the procedures and reap the profits of such miracles that stem cell will allegedly do? Because they do not expect the reseach to be successful.
Ponce deLeon seached for the fountain of youth AND DIDN"T FIND IT. He didn't find it because, like the promises made for stem cells, it isn't there.

Bush is the first President to ever fund stem cell research. The bill he vetoed only provided funding to create new stem cell lines from embryos. He has not done anything to stop research on existing lines. And as I already stated, he approved funding for research on existing lines, and new lines, as long as they are not gotten from embryos.
Please know what you are talking about before you go on a rant.

Yes. Limiting federal funding directly retards investigation into this. Granted, the private sector can still move forward, but the lack of federal funding only slows progress.
I think that there needs to be some sort of ethics involved in this kind of research, but I don't think they should be dictated by someone'e interpretation of the Bible.

Ditto to Kingstubborn. Also, there are plenty of stem cells available from umbilical cords, and these don't require creation of human lives just to farm their parts.
