Parents are more focused on how their children develop academically, rather than allowing them to play, develop an imagination, and just plain have fun. Having said that, my son is going to kindergarten next year, and people have told me that I have a lot of work to do with him in regards to his academics before he will be ready to go. What should he HAVE to know before he goes? I'm not going to push Algebra on a 4 year old to get him into school.. I'm talking what he HAS to know.
He knows all his colors and can point them out. He can count to 20 and point out the numbers from 1-10 when asked. He can write his name, Mom, Dad, and his brother's name. He knows all his letters and can point them out when asked. He knows the shapes.. circle, triangle, rectangle, square, heart, oval, trapezoid, rhombus, octagon ( working on pentagon, hexagon and septagon ) .. and he can draw them all when asked. Is there anything else that he HAS to know? I'm not taking time from him being a kid.

Great question! It sounds like you've made some good progress with him. My suggestion would be to make sure he can also say and write his ABCs and color in side of the lines in a coloring book (I'm not joking). It would also be a good idea to call the school now and ask if you can speak to a kindergarden teacher about your question. After that, just get him excited about starting school and learning. Read to him a lot and teach him how to listen well and play well with others.

Your son does not need the ******** you have described. What he needs to take to kindy, with the blessing of the kindy staff are good manners. You are responsible for that.
You have identified that he can write, knows his colours and his shapes and (working on pentagon, hexagon and heptagon) and he can draw when asked.
Geez, have ya let the little fella do a jigsaw, paint a picture letting him use his own little imagination, make sandcastles at the beach, let an icecream melt and fall down on his arms, help you bake a cake and lick the spoons, let him get get sauce over his face at the local fair, allowed him to dance, sing or ride horses.
He is 4 years old and ya stressing already. Give the kid a break luvey.
His first year at school is about social interactions and a little bit ABC and 123.
Good luck.

All the kids I have seen lately, starting kindergarten, know their alphabet at least. I wouldn't stress over any of it though. He will get along just find. Probably better when parents aren't anal about every little thing. Children get stressed too.
The only thing I would suggest is if he isn't already on a sleep schedule conducive to school hours, start him now so it will be easier.

Make sure he can tie his shoes,.knows his address and phone number(including area code) And the days of the week... Don't worry about pentagon, hexagon or other math stuff like that...he won't need to learn them for a little while. Work on his physical skills and read him books...the library has a list of the books recommended for kindergardeners who will have to do Accelerated Reading Program, which they are required to do in the States.Read to him alot...that's important to children and you......Parents tend to spend too much time trying to school thier children themselves...let your child grow up in imagination as well as schooling...schooling is important but pushing a child too far can backfire and parents don't seem to see when they are pushing too far...I let my two grow up with the basics I referred to you (along with most of the ones you taught yours) and they are just fine...1 in middle school, Honor Role...the other Business Management College...I'm a proud mama...I didn't push too far...

Wow, you are an amazing Mom - congratulations!! The only other things I can think of are his address and telephone number. It's awesome that you take such time with your child. He'll be fine in kindergarten.

I would say you've done well :)
If I were you I'd sit him down with a book and teach him to start reading on his own.
I was reading adults books when I was 5... I didn't understand all of it but at that age I still has a basic understanding.

how to share, cooperate with others, play in a group. It sounds like your son is already academically ready for kindergarten, don't worry about it!

they test them before they go in to school now. he must know how to write his name, know his (full) name, abc, colors, his home address and his phone number and of course be potty trained.. if he dont know it all its ok they will work with him some. but now a days they start teaching them to read as soon as they start school. not like it was when we was kids....
