Most chickens prefer to stay on the ground, however they can fly, if their wings are not clipped. Check out the bantam.........they normally roost in trees and can fly further than a leghorn, sex-link, rhode island reds, etc., because of their light weight. There are chickens living in Mexico called Chatchulaca that fly for great distances.

Natural, wild chickens can fly, just like wild turkey fly.
I've seen flocks of turkey back in virginia that would be feegind in the road, and as you drove up they would all fly away.
Chickens are the same way. theyve been bred to have too much body weight, and too short wings to really fly that well, but yes they can fly.
Wild chicken can fly even better, because they naturally adapt themselves over generations to have better wings and lower body weigh once again, just liek a bird should have, and then they can fly again.

Domestic chickens are not capable of flying for long distances, although they are generally capable of flying for short distances such as over fences. Chickens will sometimes fly simply in order to explore their surroundings, but will especially fly in an attempt to flee when they perceive danger. Because of the risk of flight, chickens raised in the open air generally have one of their wings clipped by the breeder.

I think once upon a time all could fly but some of them - the same as some of us, started to think that flying for their goals is not worth that much and then slowly they forgot how to fly and then suddenly understood that they are afraid for flying which was once in their nature.
You see all the chicken that you saw up the three were in the way of necessity of flying refer to some of us nowadays, who can fly upper limit of our capabilities - e.g. leadership, loving all helping each other and so on.....

Yes, but not a long distance. I use to raise chickens and when it came time to put the chicken up-(into the freezer) its called wring their necks. You would cut off the chicken head sometimes the chickens headless body would jump and fly around.

Chickens' natural habitat is the forest floor, where they grub about for food. So naturally they can walk better than they can fly. Farmers often clip their wings so that the ycannot fly away.

They can fly. The furthest that one has been recorded flying is about the length of a football pitch, flying about 1-2ft in the air.

They can fly. Although they usually don't. I saw a dog take after one one time and it took off in the air like a rocket.

Yes they can fly - not very well but enough to roost in trees, which they do in nature. Most farmyard (brown) hens are too heavy to fly, though, and often their wings are clipped.
