i have a laptop and my brother has desktop, can we play multiplayer games only using lan cable connecting our 2 network cards without hubs or routers. I can transfer files between for info. Any other settings required?

connect both the computer using a cross cable and then you can play not only games but also transfer files & data from one computer to another.

Yes you can do this using a "Cross over Cable"

You will need to set static IP addresses for each PC to get the multiplayer gaming going though.

Just make sure they are on the same subnet.

EG:

PC#1 IP = 192.168.1.1 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0

&

PC#2 IP = 192.168.1.2 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0

Just make sure you are in the same workgroup and any firewall are set to allow both systems to access each other. That is all you should need
