I love Lady Macbeth, Elphaba, and a lot of the ones that are previously stated, but my all-time favorite has to be Maggie from Cat on a Hot Tin Roof by Tennessee Williams.

She's feisty, strong, beautiful, and utterly independent, but the way she's written is such that she's still so inherently human. And in every scene she's in you can see the facade she puts up so her husband won't know how much he's hurting her. She's just overall an amazing character, definitely my favorite if not from any play than at least from any Williams.

That is really tough - I like Lady MacBeth too - and it is IMPOSSIBLE to pick between a male and a female character - so I have to give you some of my personal favorites - all of these characters are complex, interesting and generally evolve by the end of the play:

Maggie - Cat on a Hot Tin Roof
Stanley - Streetcar Named Desire
Hamlet - uh, Hamlet - hee hee
Nora - A Doll's House

Lady Macbeth.

She is extremely complex. Not just a vicious and manipulative schemer who whispers in her husband's ear as the death toll mounts, she is a desperately frustrated woman exercising what power she has to make her mark.

Though she claims she could easily dash an infant's head against a rock and shatter his brains, she later manifests a classic symptom of remorse for her real deeds, that is, she can't sleep. Instead she roams the palace trying to wash imaginary blood from her hands.

Fascinating character in an outstanding play that gets deeper with each additional reading.

Definitely Elphaba from the musical "Wicked." She is someone that anyone who's ever been an outcast can relate to, and her boldness (especially in light of her outcast status) is inspiring (espcially since the songs do such a great job of bringing that out)!!

Aaron in Titus Andronicus...so pure and simply evil. The only thing he regretted at the end was that he hadn't done more evil. You want complex then there's Hamlet, but you have read the whole play, not see the chopped up Mel Gibson movie.

I love Dr. Martha Livingstone from Agnes of God. She is so intruiging, and is one of the few characters in dramatic literature who is so genuinely affected by those around her.

I also love the main character in Equus. He's so off his rocker, and it's truly amazing the way that you learn how he became as such.
