SYDNEY (Reuters) - Australian authorities have urged fans of Steve Irwin not to attack stingrays after several rays were found dead since the TV naturalist was killed in a rare fatal attack by one of the normally placid animals.

Irwin, whose "Crocodile Hunter" documentaries were watched by more than 200 million people, was killed eight days ago when the serrated barb from a stingray's tail pierced his heart.

DO ANY OF THE FANS HAVE ANY IDEA OF WHAT THEY'RE DOING? Just because one of the most famous crocodile hunters of the century got killed by one stingray doesn't mean that every single one should be killed. Those people weren't using their noodle at all! Remember when those two professional white tiger trainers (siegfried and roy) was doing a show at the Mirage, and Roy was accidently bitten around the neck by one of his white tigers? Research showed that the tiger was trying to protect Roy from the audience member, whom distracted the tiger during performance. When he was sent to the hospital, he clearly stated that he didn't want the tiger to be put down. I've read that few people have died from the stingray's poison. I'm not saying that Steve Irwin didn't know what he was doing to the stingray, but he should have studied stingrays a little bit more because they are extremely shy water creatures. You don't just go swim near the great barrier reef and scoop up a stingray with your own hands. The stingray was only defending itself with its poisonous tail, and it accidently got near Steve Irwin's heart.

Yes they are thick as pigswill. Most people have said exactly what I was thinking but I'm so angry about it I have to have a rant! He and his crew were in their territory and it obviously felt threatened. It was just a rare unfortunate accident - only 4 people have ever died from a stingray. There's something seriously wrong with this world and these ignorant b****rds should be given severe penalties for killing such interesting an beautiful creatures of the sea. Steve loved all wildlife and would be extremely saddened by this act of stupidity and cruelty. He would want people to carry on his work, not destroy everything he spent his whole life working to protect.

Probably both thick and cruel, stingrays are very placid creatures and what happened to Steve Irwin was a totally freak accident, it could have happened to anyone of us, what are they going to do if a cat scratches a child in error through play, put every cat down, its very sad and very sick of them to do that and if Steve Irwin were alive he would be totally disgusted by their behaviour, guess something needs to be done before mass hysteria sets in.

That's terrible. These people are obviously uneducated fools. If they had bothered to read the story properly they would know that Stingrays are normally placid and only attack when in fear. If they were true Steve Irwin fans then they would know that there is no way he would condone the killing of an innocent creature.

I would say yes, at the end of the day the stingray only attacked because he felt threatened, if Steve was looking down on the people who claim to be his fans etc he would be turning in his grave as his whole life's work was about taking care of animals certainly not about exacting revenge!!! Idiots!!

That's dumb. Irwin would not have wanted that. Horrible thing to do. He loved all animals why on earth would he want ppl to harm the work he's done. Let the man rest in peace and rule it a rare death. By killing these stingrays they are provoking danger themselves but increasing the grieving of his wife and son.

What????? If this is correct, it's beyond thick! I can't even begin to imagine the mindset of people who would do something like that. Surely not true fans of Steve Irwin would even consider it, it goes against everything he stood for as a public exponent of environmental issues and respect for nature.

We all know how Steve liked to get"a bit close"so the stingray was probably defending its self,
I agree,it's insane to "kill all stingrays"because of the death of Steve Irwin"
It's a MAD MAD MAD world, full of stupid STUPID people

Yes, unfortunately a lot of people on this planet are stupid. Steve Irwin wasn't the brightest man in the world (e.g. dangling his child in front of a crocodile), but at least he wasn't malicious in his treatment of animals.
