Why do men make the same mistakes their fathers did even though they are aware they had a bad childhood and want better for their children ~ do they just not know how be fathers?

Lots of people copy the behaviour of their parents but lots make an effort to change in some respect.

I see lots of dads being a lot more affectionate with their kids these days than was the case forty years ago - hugging, praising and kissing which i think is really good.

You are right though it is hard for many men to know how to be fathers when they did not have one around or had a bad one but lots of them try to be good dads. Not perfect dads but the best they can be.

As a father of 2 boys I cannot disagree with you more. I came out of a vile and abusive childhood. I never want my kids to go hungry or to bed scared or hurt. I encourage and help were I can. I listen and reason with them and yes some times they get a smack on the ***. My boys are my best friends and I am still there dad. I dint sleep around like my father nor do I hit there mother. They have duties to do every day but so do I. I do all I can for them without over doing it. Remember the greatest gift a father can give to his sons is to love there mother. Good luck my friend.

Think of it in this way - men (and women also) think "I turned out fine and learned to cope" and so with that in mind, they raise their children.

Not all men with bad childhoods are lousy fathers and there are some men that have become better parents then their female counterparts.

i think its basically the gender difference.but i still dont think that we can generalise.i see more and more men making an earnest effort at better parenting than their forefathers.as nuclear families are the order of the day, i can see the obvious change in the roles played by both parents. in fact guys are making a genuine effort to NOT do what their fathers did.

Every mother and father have their own ideas of raising the children for good or bad both do it for the love of the child. We all make mistakes but i hope we all learn from them.

They just do not know any better. However it takes a special person WANT TO ACTUALLY to break the cycle.

Don't you teach your child how to talk?
Don't you teach your child how to walk?

Child learn that is OK for a daddy to be abusive or distance from the mother, and the child/ren. So they think it is OK. So when it is time for them to be a parent. They are going to have that in their mind.

Me-----
I am one of them special person that wants to break the cycle. However I am not a parent yet. I do not want to be anything like my "dad" was when I was growing up.

your question is a generalization and fails to mention all the terrible mothers out there and how many good dads there are who ARE different from their fathers. You must live in a tiny, closed world.
