1200 would build an amazing computer - by mystandards.

All you need to do is go to the computer store and buy a middle of the road motherboard with built in network interfaces and sound capabilities - music. I would say built in video as well but the new Vista operating system has new dmands so be sure to build to them if you plan on going that way.

Now all you need is a case, power supply, better than average video card, memory, hard drive, optical drive, floppy, cpu - get one with a reasonable amount of L2 cache, and an operating system.

Many stores sell bundles of the basics you can ad onto.

Building your own is a great way to go. The quality is higher, and it is more reliable, or it can be - both.

Good Luck!

Big questions abound... Will you intend to try to run the "extremely bloated and full of spyware" Vista?

If so, hold off until it is on the shelves in stores! It has a large amount of DRM that makes it very hard to integrate it with any custom built hardware.

I go Linux, for the free games, programs, and true freedom of choice for all users. http://pclinuxos.com

But, I get used computers, refurbished systems, that have all been proven in real testing in the real world. I usually am about 2 to 4 generations behind the bleeding edge in hardware. It's less expensive...

Get a tower with a 500 watt power supply. 2.4 cpu or better, 1 gb ram, 80 gb HD or bigger, a 52X cd player, a DVD burner.
