It's a complete waste of money, Councils should be prosecuted under the Trades Description Act for selling a service that they don't provide. My local council is terrible, all the money I pay and they are considering reducing my bin collections to once every 2 weeks, the police are a joke and I really don't know where my money goes.

not sure about council tax but some councils are a waste of money. getting to the question seriously though, I think all tax payers should se where there money is being spent penny by penny. At the end of the tax year they should all have the right to vote for the item they want dropped from the list excluding essential services etc.

It gives me the hump, I drive over them all the time. I need a "Chelsea tractor". My council has bought up a stock of white paint and are painting all the main roads with it. the cops use their share of CT to buy speed cameras - that raise money for more speed cameras. I saw a copper on the beat - actually two. A copper and his babe assistant. I think all the business rates should go to the council instead of the government. Then they could add 2.5 % to VAT and give that to the council. then scrap Council tax all together. With most manufactured goods coming in from China and cheap places, a 20% VAT rate wouldn't hurt. Stores would just cut prices and compete. Putting excise licence on petrol would be good too. Another bill we wouldn't have to pay. Then go bloody mad and get rid of the TV licence with discrete advertising for government departments in between programs. Sack Wogan that would save a million and sell off loads of BBC radio stations that have a tiny audience. Anything with less than 5 million viewers or listeners - sell it! No council tax, no excise duty, no TV licence, vote for me - I'll sort the bloody mess out.

Give me top answer at least! lol

very good question, I would expect a better service from the councils for the amount of council tax that is collected by the local councils. I think it's a waste of money

the council tax should never have been introduced, because it a lot of ways it is a tax of the poor, the old rates system which worked for years was a much fairer way of paying for the local services, after all why would someone in a bedsit pay the same amount as someone in a huge sprawling estate just because they live in the same borough, plus the rate of increase each year does not reflect in raises in salaries, of course those well off citizens will say we should all pay the same which, is stupid, it definitely should be got rid of and replaced with a fairer system

Considering the council tax is for collection of waste, police and fire services plus local street lighting and a couple of other things I think it is a good idea although it is alot to pay each month

It should be spent on diamonds, swans eggs, peacock feathers and fountains of champagne to be showered on immigrants as they arrive in this country. Perhaps we can set some money aside to buy them horses and carriages to drive around like the royalty they are supposed to be.Even Serbian rapists and AIDS victims from Somalia. F*ck, why don't we give all foriegners overseas £10.00 right now to get them started, with the phone number for the Benefits office on the reverse?

I think it's a bit much, although I do appreciate the library and the bin collection. However, apart from that what exactly am I getting? I think free access to the local swimming pool/leisure centre should be included in the charge.
