Kidney stones, also known as nephrolithiases, urolithiases or renal calculi, are solid accretions (crystals) of dissolved minerals in urine found inside the kidneys or ureters. They vary in size from as small as a grain of sand to as large as a golf ball. Kidney stones typically leave the body in the urine stream; if they grow relatively large before passing (on the order of millimeters), obstruction of a ureter and distention with urine can cause severe pain most commonly felt in the flank, lower abdomen and groin.

I have had kidney stones a few times and let me tell you its not pleasant - you are in so much pain that - well its hard to describe - The first time I had to go to hospital by ambulance and was given morphine - this did nothing so I was then given pethadine - I was asked to give a urine sample and it was the colour of coke. The second time I again had to go by ambulance to hospital (too much pain to get yourself there) I was given pethadine - this time though there was a large stone stuck in the tube and it was too big to blast I had to have a stent put in which makes the tube bigger then a month later they took out the stent and the stone - its not pretty thats for sure - they say having kidney stones is the best way to describe to males what child birth feels like - I have also heard of people saying it hurts more than child birth and is apparently one of the worst pains to feel... here is some info I got from the following site ...

A kidney stone is a hard mass developed from crystals that separate from the urine and build up on the inner surfaces of the kidney.

Kidney stones often do not cause any symptoms. Usually, the first symptom of a kidney stone is extreme pain, which occurs when a stone acutely blocks the flow of urine. The pain often begins suddenly when a stone moves in the urinary tract, causing irritation or blockage. Typically, a person feels a sharp, cramping pain in the back and side in the area of the kidney or in the lower abdomen. Sometimes nausea and vomiting occur. Later, pain may spread to the groin.

If the stone is too large to pass easily, pain continues as the muscles in the wall of the tiny ureter try to squeeze the stone along into the bladder. As a stone grows or moves, blood may appear in the urine. As the stone moves down the ureter closer to the bladder, you may feel the need to urinate more often or feel a burning sensation during urination.

It is THE MOST painful thing in the world. I'd rather be shot than have another kidney stone.

Lower back pain, radiating from back to front. The pain is sharp, intense. For me, the pain is so bad that I constantly throw up and only very few things help the pain stop. I can take 3 percoset and still be in wicked pain!!!

I've heard too much calcium in the diet, not enough water...too many carbonated beverages are all causes. I do know some people get them and some don't - not matter what they drink. Where I used to work there was an inordinately high number of people with chronic kidney stones - so theirs were attributed to water or air conditions in the community.

It is a small stone forming in the kidney (usually calcium) As it is exiting the kidney--you have terrible pain. Once it enters the bladder, there is no more pain (it still hurts from the damage it has done while passing into the bladder). You can then strain your urine and see the stone. Drink lots of water to prevent this build up of calcium. The pain is in the lower right or left of the body--radiating from back to front of the body. If you drink lots of water while passing the stone, sometimes you can pass it on your own. Moving around while passing it also helps. However, You may start vomiting because you are full of water and are not passing it so it comes back up. Not fun. (I've passed 7)

I couldn't just sit around and do nothing like my doctors suggested.

They didn't want me to do anything or to take herbs or herbal remedies, but I had to try something - they just wanted me to do dialysis!

This program allowed me to take control of my health. I went from Stage 4 to Stage 3 kidney disease.

It was easy to do and my BUN, creatinine and anemia are all in better ranges.

They are nasty little mineral deposits that build up in the kidney which either have to be removed or 'passed' through the system. They are like little spiky asteroids which cause AGONY if they get stuck in your 'tubes' so make sure you do everything you can to avoid them if you are prone to them.
