I have seen a good majority of folks from all over Gujarat (including Ahmedabad) visiting Mt. Abu. They use to drive down in their own cars / saloons, by ordinary and delux buses or even plenty of chartered tours. Ahmedabad is very well connected to Mt. Abu by rail and road and the distance is not very far. Roads are good (that is why I saw plenty of families from Ahmedabad in their own cars).

Having reached Mt. Abu, opt for guided tour of one full day, avoid half day tours - as full day tours cover almost all of visiting places of common interests. These tours are economic and efficiently conducted. Mt. Abu is dominated by Gujarati food!!! You can also have Rajasthani, Punjabi, Mughlai, South Indian and (lousy) Chinese food as well. All budget hotels are available in the heart of the town - a small place, and the road from main bus stand to sunset point is filled with hotels / lodges/ Inns. What else? Not a good place for shopping - atleast from a Delhite's point of view!
Tour, eat, enjoy and have a good time.
